In 1979, the founder of Karate-Do Goju-Kai Singapore (K.G.S.), Shihan David Chew (5th Dan Black Belt – Godan) realized that the Goju style Karate that he had been practicing was in fact not the pure Goju art but a mixture of different styles. He wrote to the President of All Japan Karate-Do Goju-Kai Association (J.KG.A.), Grandmaster Gogen Yamaguchi (10th Dan Black Belt – Judan), who was also the president of the International Karate-Do Goju-Kai Association (I.K.G.A.). On the suggestion of Grandmaster Gogen Yamaguchi, Shihan David Chew reported to the Hombu (HQ) Dojo of I.K.G.A. based in Tokyo, Japan, to undergo intensive training.
In 1980, after more than six months of training at Hombu Dojo, Shihan David Chew returned to Singapore to set up K.G.S. with the blessing of I.K.G.A, and registered K.G.S. with the Registry of Societies (ROS). K.G.S. was thus officially affiliated to I.K.G.A. and became the official I.K.G.A. Singapore Branch. Subsequently, K.G.S. was admitted as an affiliate of the Singapore Karate-Do Federation (S.K.F.), the National Sports Association of Karate-Do in Singapore.
Since 1992, members of K.G.S. have actively participated in local and overseas Karate-Do competitions and championships. K.G.S. has trained and produced numerous competent Karate-Kas who have won medals at national and international levels. K.G.S. is also one of the few Karate-Do associations in Singapore whose members have represented Singapore in the Asia Karate-Do Federation (AKF) championships (formerly know Asian Union of Karate-Do Organization, AUKO) and the South-East Asia (SEA) Games.
In August 2006, Sim Chiew Hong, a member of K.G.S., represented Singapore to compete in the Female Individual Kumite, Under 53KG and the Female Team Kumite events in the 8th AKF Junior and Cadet Karate-Do Championships. In November 2007, K.G.S. sent a team of 19 members, consisting of 12 players and 7 officials to the 4th Asia-Pacific Goju-Kai Karate-Do Championships in Hong Kong, and competed against some of the best GojuKarate-kas from countries like Japan , Iran , Australia and many others.
At present, K.G.S. is headed by Shihan David Koh (Chief Instructor, K.G.S.) and is assisted by Sensei Eugene Koh. K.G.S. has four dojos: Bishan Community Club, Changi-Simei Community Club, Bedok Community Club and Changi-Simei Zone ‘3' RC Centre. To date, the association has more than 200 members in Singapore, with its membership continuing to grow steadily. |
