This year’s Pesta Sukan National Karate-Do Junior & Senior Championships 2005 was held at the Toa Payoh Sports Complex on July 31, 2005. This year’s Pesta Sukan was a bigger event than usual – combining the categories of Children (14 - 15 years), Cadet (16 – 17 years), Junior (18 – 21 years) and Senior (above 21years) into one event.
The karatekas of KGS trained very hard for the competition, sacrificing their Sunday afternoons and evenings in the entire month of July and devoting this time to grueling training to prepare for the tournament. Everyone emerged fitter, more skilled and more prepared to face the competition.

Led by Team Captain Alaric Tan, 12 karatekas from KGS entered the competition, particularly in the kumite tournament, which saw 9 associations and a total of 150 karatekas participate and pit their skills against each other. It was a day of keen competition, intense title defending, and good sportsmanship. Competition was tough, and those who won truly deserved their award.
The KGS team rallied around each other, moving from one court to the other, and back again to support those of us who were meeting our opponents.
Congratulations to our KGS medal winners:
· Benjamin Low - Gold (Cadet) · Song Jian Han - Gold (Junior) · Adrian Yeap - Silver (Junior) · Ong Peiyi - Silver (Senior) · Vanessa Ang - Bronze (Senior) · Chua Choon Hong - Bronze (Senior)
Although KGS ranked 4th out of 9 associations in the medal tally, Head Coach Eugene Koh felt that KGS’ performance could have been better. He observed that the opponents who beat our karatekas in the finals were not any better than our karatekas, but they fought more aggressively and seemed to have greater will to win. Koh added, “KGS certainly has the potential to be one of the top Karate schools in the local Karate-Do arena. It’s a matter of time before our players become more experienced and move into maturity in karate. For this to happen, our karatekas need more fighting exposure and a strong winning attitude.”
