History of Karate-Do Goju-Kai Singapore (KGS)

In 1979, the founder of Karate-Do Goju-Kai Singapore (KGS), Renshi David Chew (5th Dan Black Belt) realized that the Goju style Karate that he had been training was in fact not pure Goju art but a mixture of different styles. He then wrote to the Grandmaster of the All-Japan Karate-Do Goju-Kai Association (J.K.G.A), Hanshi Gogen Yamaguchi (10th Dan Black Belt), who was also the head of the International Karate-Do Goju-Kai Association (I.K.G.A.). Hence, Renshi David Chew was instructed to report to the Hombu Dojo of I.K.G.A. based in Tokyo, Japan to undergo intensive training.

In 1980, after more than six months of intensive training, Renshi David Chew returned to Singapore to setup Karate-Do Goju-Kai Singapore (KGS) with the blessing of I.K.G.A. KGS was then officially affiliated to I.K.G.A. KGS registered with the Registries of Societies (ROS). Subsequently, KGS was admitted as an affiliate of the Singapore Karate-Do Federation (SKF), the National Sports Association of Karate-Do in Singapore. Being an affiliate of SKF and I.K.G.A., the association is a locally recognized Karate school and is also recognized in the international Goju-Kai Karate-Do arena.

From 1992 till now, members of KGS have actively been participating in numerous local and overseas championships. KGS has trained and produced numerous competent Karate-Kas who have become national champions and international champions. Furthermore, KGS is also one of the few Karate clubs/associations whose members have represented the nation in the Asia Karate-Do Federation Junior and Senior Championships (formerly known as Asian Union of Karate-Do Organization – AUKO) and more importantly, in the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games.

Currently, the association is headed by Renshi David Koh (Chief Instructor) and assisted by Sensei Eugene Koh (Head Coach). KGS has four dojos, namely Bishan Community Club, Changi-Simei Community Club, Singapore Management University and Raffles Town Club. To date, the association has more than 100 trainees across the island and is still growing gradually.
