The 39th Karate-Do Goju-Kai Singapore International Championship was held on 3rd Aug 2019. Raising the standards this year, we have shifted our venue to the Singapore Badminton Hall at Upper Jurong Road. This year, 205 competitors represented 20 teams hailing from 6 countries across the region attended the championship.
Under the guidance of our seasoned players Senpai Suhas Shekhar, Senpai Tan Shi Ying and Senpai Chua Sheng Da assisted by Juniors Senpai Rishabh Shenoy and Senpai Isaiah Tang, Team KGS went ahead to fight strong despite not having our usual coaches and team managers. By far the largest team, KGS was well represented by 35 athletes from as young as 6 years old. Coming in 2nd place in the overall medal tally ranking, Team KGS clinched 4 gold medals, 9 silver medals and 15 bronze medals despite the fierce competition.
Special mentions goes to Nasreen Ahmed who earned herself a gold medal in Kumite and seasoned fighter Kok Shi Yun who came in 1st in Kumite despite struggling with managing school and training prior to competition. Congratulations to all medal winners for a job well done and to all competitors brave enough to embark on this competitive journey. We look forward to your continued improvement and future successes!
The association would like to take this opportunity to thank the Shihans, Senseis, Senpais and all participants for your continued support from and attendance at our annual event. As we compete to be the best, we also cherish the friendships and bonds forged at championship such as this. We would like to thank our venue partner, Singapore Badminton Hall Arena, our sponsors, Essential Werkz, Synergiz, Silent Knight International and individual sponsors. We are also thankful for the referee support from our overseas friends and local referee representation from KYK, SKA and Shudokan Karate. Last but not least, a huge thanks to the many parents, past and current students who stepped up to volunteer with this championship. It was a long day of hard work but this championship would not have been possible without each and every one of you.
With this, we concluded our 39th Karate-Do Goju-Kai Singapore International Championship 2019. We sincerely hope everyone has enjoyed their time and experience here. We hope to see you again next year as we host our 40th edition of the championship!
